I decided to force myself to adapt to the icy cold of Midwest winters, so I drove over to spend the day in Liberty Missouri. I layered, and layered some more. I felt weighted down and draggy as I moved about. In San Diego, I spent my life in sundresses and sandals. I am unused to seasons, especially snowy winters. They are enchanting, but require a certain hardiness.
When I arrived, I parked in the center of the historic district. I began meandering through town, which has scores of boutiques and eateries.
I entered the Copper Canary boutique, and smiled at all the apparel for the Kansas City Chief fans. Football is a really big deal here. When I first moved to the region, I texted my siblings back in California and told them how surprised I was to see Chief’s products in every shop, including grocery stores and drug stores. When I was growing up in San Diego, if you wanted a team shirt, you had to drive down to the stadium to get one. The fans here are some of the most spirited in the world. Most everyone attends a “watch party” for every game. We gather around t.v. sets together, and vigorously cheer our Chiefs. However, there are a few who prefer to watch alone in dead silence, so they can thoroughly concentrate. You will always find me in the midst of an exhilarating watch party. While at the Copper Canary, I purchased a pair of the feather-type drop earrings. Even as I write this, the Chiefs are advancing to the 2024 Super Bowl, so I am ready!
I stopped in for a warming latte at Huey’s on the Square, which overlooks the old courthouse. I met a delightful local elder – Thomas. He is a retired Air Force officer and was a physician. I asked him where I should visit while I was in town and he loaded me up with suggestions. He even called his daughter and handed his phone to me. She, also, gave me insider’s advice. That is why I love talking to locals!
I went over to the Historic Downtown Liberty office, where I discovered, like Lee’s Summit, they too are part of the great preservation movements: Main Street America and Missouri Main Street. Liberty is one of only eight who is accredited with these auspicious organizations, that help maintain the historical identity of towns.
I continued on to Petals and Potpourri. This shop is a visual treat. You will find yourself browsing slowly and lingering.
The Parlor on Water Street has a fun, whimsical feel.
l left the boutiques to go find Liberty’s past. Up the street, is the Historic Liberty Jail, which is where Mormon leader, Joseph Smith, was held for a time. It is a small building with just a few tiny windows, which would make the two rooms dark and smoky (from the fire pits and candles). The jailer lived on the top floor and the prisoners down below. The door was locked exteriorly. Even the jailer was sealed inside.
Nearby is the Clay County History Museum. I received a tour from Chery, the curator. They have huge history here. Come and let them tell you all the fascinating stories.
If you want to find your ancestors in this region, visit the Archives. I also hope students, film makers, and authors will take advantage of these types of facilities around the nation. As only about 10% of all information has been scanned, digitized, and provided online, the bulk of all information from the past is housed in repositories, where they are indexed, stored, and waiting for us utilize. Don’t rely on oral history. As staff member, Steve, pointed out to me – “memories are malleable”. I can validate that based on my own faulty remembrances. So, go to the Archives, which hold the primary-source records and photos. There you will find the real, documented stories.
Before I left town, I stopped at Nickel & Suede. The founder, Kilee Nickels, is a renowned fashion icon. Her company is headquartered in Liberty, Missouri. It includes an on-site shop. We are lucky to have her production center right here in the Kansas City area. They also do pop-ups around the country. I enjoy getting to run over and see her new creations for every season and holiday.
Liberty Missouri is a notable stopover for any trip. It will fill up your day with pleasurable experiences.
